Sheffield United edged into the FA Cup’s fourth round proper with a narrow 2-1 victory over non-league opposition on Sunday afternoon.

The Blades defeated AFC Fylde at Bramall Lane thanks to goals from Callum Robinson and Leon Clarke, but they were left battling an uncomfortable end after Jordan Williams pulled one back for the visitors with just over ten minutes remaining.

Chris Wilder’s much-changed side managed to cling on, though.

The 52-year-old named an entirely new starting XI to the one that was defeated 2-0 by Liverpool in the league last week with several fringe players being gifted a rare opportunity, including both Freeman’s, Kieron and Luke, Muhamed Besic and Phil Jagielka.

However, their progression has come at a considerable cost as their only addition so far this month, Jack Rodwell, picked up an injury which saw him forced off in the 58th minute for first-team regular Chris Basham.

The midfielder was playing well during his debut appearance for the Blades in the centre-back role, but they could well be without him for the foreseeable future.

Rodwell only joined the club last week, where Wilder described him as being “excellent” around the training ground, while also stating that he “offers [United] versatility and experience in a number of key positions and adds further depth to the group which is important at this stage of the season.”

The 28-year-old had been without a club since leaving Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers in the summer, so it may have been a sign that he’s far from being match fit and that he may need time before he makes a regular impact in the red and white stripes of Sheffield.
