Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Wesley Hoedt took aim at Ralph Hasenhuttl and the club in an exclusive interview with Flemish outlet Het Nieuwsblad.
The centre-back – who the Saints signed from Lazio in a deal worth £15m – is currently on a season-long loan at Belgian side Royal Antwerp but has decided to take a swipe at his parent side and the former RB Leipzig manager.
The Netherlands international has made 45 appearances for Southampton, and spent the second half of last season on loan at La Liga outfit Celta Vigo, before almost immediately being shipped out to Antwerp upon his return to St Mary’s.
Hoedt told Het Nieuwsblad: “That trainer sent me away, say. I went to Celta de Vigo for six months. When I returned, I was so fit that I was at the top of all the lists in the tests. He came to tell me that he was impressed and that I deserved a second chance. But then I responded: ‘What do you mean, second chance? I have never had a first among you.’
“Now, I have shown myself in preparation for eight weeks – very well trained and played – but in the end, it was again: ‘We don’t need you, you can go’. Anyway, I am still under contract, so I am not going to start a mud fight. The Southampton chapter is as good as closed to me. That trainer is still there. Even after they were knocked 9-0 by Leicester, he was allowed to stay.”
It appears that Hoedt isn’t too fussed about having a future at Southampton under Hasenhuttl after his recent comments, in which he truly does not hold back.
After the Austrian coach froze Charlie Austin and Mario Lemina out of the first-team, you wouldn’t expect Hasenhuttl to take these comments lightly.
Let’s see how the Southampton fans on Twitter reacted to his words…
This fan said that they were left “genuinely staggered” by Hoedt’s comments, before asking if the 25-year-old was “delusional” – they ended their assessment of the Dutchman’s words by brandishing them as “laughable really” – it’s hard to argue with this verdict, as the former Lazio man surely hasn’t done himself any favours.
Another supporter named Nick said that “you can see why Ralph wanted him gone” before stating that Hoedt is “blissfully ignorant” – they also said that the defender thinks he’s world class, but is completely useless in reality.
These two fans added to the fume over the centre-back’s comments.
‘King Creole’ said that Hoedt performed “abysmally” while at the club and accused him of not taking responsibility and blaming others for his misfortune, while Tom said that he “thinks he’s bigger than the club”.
Meanwhile, Dan said that he’s glad Hoedt is gone while also stating that the player “clearly” thinks too much of himself and doesn’t deliver.
Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?
Lastly, Jon suggested that Hoedt is surely breaching his contract by talking so poorly of Hasenhuttl and the club, which is a fair assessment of the situation.
In other news, Southampton have been offered a player who would ensure Hasenhuttl comes good on his transfer declaration if he arrived at St Mary’s…
